It's time to speak up!

Have you been to your doctor multiple times with no real answers as to why you don’t feel well?

Often, by the time I meet my clients, they have been to several practitioners, all of whom are not quite sure what the underlying issue really is or have been given a diagnosis and treatment plan that doesn’t result in them feeling better.

I also experienced this myself. I knew something was not right with me and so I sought out help from 4 different doctors with no resolution.

It really deflates the spirit and increases anxiety and fear for the future.

Questions that came up for me were:

- Am I a lost cause?

- Are my health issues so complicated that nobody will ever be able to help me?

- Will I ever feel healthy again?

I consider myself a seeker. I will do just about anything to get to the heart of the issue where my health is concerned.

But I wasn’t always this way. I was taught to be respectful and to not disagree or speak up for myself. I didn’t want to take up too much of any doctor’s time, they are busy! I didn’t want to question them; they are the experts. And, there was no way in the world that I was going to actually disagree with them, they were above me.

Well, that did not work out well for me. At the time of my greatest health issues, I could not find it within myself to speak up on my own behalf. After weeks of trying to politely plead my case, I ended up in the hospital for a week.

That haunted me for a long time.

Now I know better. I am still respectful and polite and try to honor their time constraints but I always go the extra mile to give my practitioner all the information I think they will need in order to best help me. I even share my own theories about my health which I would never have imagined myself doing 15 years ago.

One of the biggest things I learned was that if my practitioner wasn’t hearing my concerns, I had a couple of choices, stick with a doctor that wasn’t able to help me OR find a practitioner that not only heard me but had the time and desire to better understand my health and address my concerns.

There is a relationship that is built between patient and practitioner and if you don’t have a relationship with your practitioner that feels right to you, find a new one. There are TONS of them out there. You just have to keep searching and asking around for recommendations.

Please, please, please always remember that you are the only one who fully understands just how “off” you feel. Never let anyone….family member, friend or practitioner, tell you that you are “just fine” if you don’t feel “just fine”. Speak up and be your own best advocate!
